Background

2002 BMW (E39) M5 exterior photo

The BMW E39 generation M5 (2000 to 2003 model years) was the pinnacle of M5 evolution. It was born from an era of BMW design that was both classic and modern. The E39 M5 was significantly more powerful, advanced, and modern than its E34 predecessor, yet was the last of the iconic traditional designs before Chris Bangle and Adrian van Hooydonk’s awkwardly styled E60. Simply put, the E39 M5 was the last of the classics. It came from a time before what I consider the modern “disposable” BMW, a time when the M5 was offered exclusively with a manual transmission. It was, and still is, the supercar that does it all. It can accommodate four adults in comfort while rewarding its driver with astonishing performance. It is refined enough for civilized daily driving, and even delivers over 25 mpg if driven conservatively. 2001 and later model years are the best, having received Angel Eyes, LED “CELIS” wave taillights, a wider navigation screen, thicker M steering wheel, and numerous other technological and safety updates. The E39 M5 was the pinnacle; every BMW generation before it was incrementally better, and every BMW since has been incrementally worse.

Summary

This Alpine White over Black Sport Leather 2002 BMW E39 M5 is one of the best M5s we’ve ever had—it resides in that sweet spot of condition, mileage, and price where it can fit nearly every mission from weekend warrior to daily driver. Alpine White is a very rare color on an E39 M5—especially with a black sport interior. It is 100% stock and has been single-family owned (the original owner gifted it to a relative in November of this year) since its delivery in November of 2001. Its maintenance history is exemplary, having been maintained with an open checkbook by BMW of Dallas since original delivery. All records are organized in a three-ring binder and total $50,400.78—not including the first 40K miles, which were covered under warranty! Recent maintenance includes the NAV screen (for $3800!), all four door vapor barriers (a common issue that can lead to electrical issues), valve cover gaskets, fuel filter, spark plugs, brake fluid flush, O2 sensors, rear wishbones, rear sway bar end links, battery, tie rods, and a differential reseal. In preparation for sale, we replaced the crank position sensor, gas cap, power steering cap O-ring, repaired driver seat twist, and replaced the instrument cluster LCD screen due to failed pixels. The last oil change was at 103,161 miles in September of 2019. The Carfax shows one damage event and one accident; the previous owner reported that the former was due to cracked front bumper cover, the latter was due to making contact with a fence during a rare ice storm in Dallas. We paint gauged the entire car, which is described in the Exterior paragraph below. Overall the exterior and interior are in very good condition. As a result, this M5 would make a great daily driver or tuck it away and enjoy it on the weekends. It has, without a doubt, been the one of the most well maintained M5’s that has graced our hangar. We’d like to find a new home for it—before Alex decides to keep it as his M5 Touring replacement!

The Alpine White paint is in very good condition for the age and mileage. Considering that, the finish has no glaring defects. There are no significant dents or scratches, and the panel gaps are straight. Most of the car has been refinished at some point thanks to individual panels being painted and others being blended. The Carfax shows one accident report and one damage report. The paint gauge report is posted in the picture gallery. The left front inner fender sheet metal has been replaced, as evident by post-factory seam sealer. All trim is present and accounted for. The headlight and indicator lenses are clear and crack free. The Angel Eyes have no missing filaments and all bulbs work. The fog lights are clear. The windshield is free of cracks. The front clip, headlights, fog lights, and mirror caps have been spared the extensive rock chipping of Colorado cars, thanks to it spending the majority of its life in Texas. The wheels are straight and have zero curb-rash, the records show them being repaired at some point. We replaced the tires with fresh Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires with less than 100 miles on them.

Interior

The interior is in excellent shape. There are no odors and it has never been smoked in. The carpet is free of stains or rips and is protected by factory BMW floor mats. The seat leather is soft and supple to the touch. There is no excessive seat bolster wear or failed seams. The dashboard leather is soft and there are no cracks. The steering wheel has no excessive wear. The instrument cluster LCD and navigation screen have failed no pixels thanks to both being recently replaced. The HVAC panel also has no failed pixels. The BMW Premium sound with DSP is fantastic, one of the best options for an E39. There are no check codes on the onboard computer and none of the check engine, DSC, or ABS warning lights are on. The cup holders both work. The one-piece leather shift knob and boot are in great shape, although the illuminated shift pattern bezel does have some crazing and burn through from the bulb. All power functions, seat motors, and seat heaters function like they should. The window regulators are quiet. The heat blows warm and the air conditioning blows cold. The fan motor does not chirp and the final stage resistor functions at all blower speeds. All owners’ manuals are present, along with the cargo net, factory floor mats, the original BMW VHS marketing cassette, and two keys.

Mechanical

Receipts from the previous owner are included in the sale, with recent items are outlined in the summary paragraph. During our inspection, we found this to be one of the best-maintained M5’s we have ever come across. We had to do very little in preparation for sale as detailed in the Summary paragraph. There are no common E39 issues like leaking valve cover gaskets, noisy VANOS units, weak clutch, soft suspension bushings, leaking cooling systems, weeping differential output seals, or inoperative/clicking window regulators. The records are extensive, and only from the BMW of Dallas. The S62 engine fires up on command, idles smoothly, and pulls strongly to redline. It has no VANOS rattle or lifter noise. There are no fluid leaks or drips. There are no SES lights or engine management codes indicating carbon build up (a redline a day keeps the carbon away!). The clutch has zero slip, the take-up is correct, and the shifter is crisp. The driveline, differential, and wheel bearings are quiet with no vibrations. The brakes have plenty of life left. Like any M5, this example will need continued preventative maintenance and repairs, which we can help with when that time comes.
