The BMW E38 generation 7 Series was the last of an iconic form that BMW had tastefully and incrementally evolved since the introduction of the flagship luxury sedan in 1977. The successor, the E65 7 Series, departed from this lineage due to Chris Bangle and Adrian van Hooydonk’s polarizing “flame surfacing” and “Bangle butt” design language, which actually appreciated the value of the E38 while it was still being sold. The post-facelift 740i M Sport, sometimes referred to as the Shorty Sporty, was the best E38 model by far. Unlike the long wheelbase variants, the shorter and lighter 740i got a true M Sport package consisting of:
By 2001, the model had undergone many other updates, including more standard options, clear turn signal indicators, color-matched side skirts and bumper fascia, and a wider navigation screen. The result is the most modern iteration of a classic, the last of the classics – the E38 740i M Sport.

This 2001 BMW E38 740i M Sport is a truly unique example. Finished in Anthracite over Sand beige leather with only 55,800 miles, its condition is pristine. Outside of being a well-optioned M Sport, it has a very tasteful build accomplished by a Santa Fe art dealer who I originally sold it for (ten years ago). That build consists of a Vortech Supercharger with a custom intake, aluminum radiator and expansion tank, electric cooling fan, strut brace, transmission tune, and a quad-tipped M5-style exhaust. The suspension is KW Variant 1 coilovers over 19-inch HRE 893R wheels. Inside is a Bavarian Soundwerks Stage 1 speaker upgrade and subwoofer powered by a Rockford Fosgate amp, steering wheel paddle shifters, upgraded NAV software, and a back-up camera. The headlights have been replaced with OEM units featuring E39 M5-style angel-eye HALO rings. The original headlight assemblies are included, along with the original armrest and BMW cell phone, as well as an all-weather car cover. The original M Parallel wheels are not included.
The 740i M Sport has a build date of January 2001 and was delivered in November of that year. It was dealer-maintained through the first two owners in Louisiana and Arizona (these may have been the same owner, who moved to Arizona in 2002). The second owner was an art dealer in Santa Fe, who purchased it in 2006 and built it into its current form. It was maintained by Sandia BMW Santa Fe and Cutting Edge Performance under his tenure. It first came to Glen Shelly in 2015, when we sold it to the previous owner in Virginia. This owner added the Euro armrest, paddle shifters, transmission tune, HALO headlights, and quad-tipped exhaust. The maintenance records date from 2002 to the present, and recent maintenance includes a timing and VANOS service, spark plugs, valve cover gaskets, valley pan gaskets, brake fluid flush, KW Variant 1 coil-over suspension, alignment, and an oil service.
Cosmetic imperfections are few and far between, with the worst being light rock chips on the leading edges, several small scratches and paint chips, most notably on the rear valance. Additionally, there is loose interior fabric on the passenger side B-pillar and light wear on the driver’s seat. Immediate needs are dated Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires (we just drove 2,000 miles on them with no issues, a finicky right rear door lock actuator, and the B-Pillar fabric. As it sits, this is one of the most unique and pristine E38 740i M Sports in the country. The supercharger and coil-overs add remarkable athleticism without compromising the civilized nature of the E38. We want to find a new owner who appreciates what it is to be the next steward of its ownership legacy.
